Palantir (PLTR) Gets JPMorgan Overweight and $262 Target Before Earnings
Oct 30, 2026 · Trading Tips
JPMorgan just put Palantir on its Analyst Focus List, and it did it days before the company reports earnings.
The bank initiated coverage Thursday at Overweight with a $262 price target for December 2027. Palantir shares changed hands near $193.70 that day, so the target implies roughly 35% upside.
The call comes at an awkward moment for AI stocks. The Nasdaq 100 was down 1.4% by early afternoon Thursday as money rotated out of AI leaders following Alphabet's record drop. Palantir slipped about 1.6% with it.
Analyst Brian Essex laid out the argument in a client note, as Yahoo Finance reported. His core point: companies have moved from figuring out how to use AI to demanding returns from it, and Palantir is already delivering.
The numbers back him up. Revenue growth accelerated for the 12th straight quarter to 93% year over year last quarter. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 62%, and free cash flow grew 126%.
That combination, hypergrowth with real profitability, is what JPMorgan says makes the valuation reasonable. And it needs to, because the stock trades at a trailing price-to-earnings multiple north of 160 and a market value around $446 billion.
Here's how JPMorgan gets to $262. It applies 55 times its 2028 enterprise-value-to-free-cash-flow estimate to $11.7 billion of projected free cash flow. The bank expects free cash flow to grow at a 77% annual rate over the three years through 2028.
JPMorgan also flagged AI sovereignty as a demand driver, a concept it says covers control of not just data but also logic, intellectual property, processes and security. It's a framing that fits Palantir's government and defense roots.
"Palantir is already delivering ROI by leveraging its platform to fundamentally transform the business operations of its customers, and growth is accelerating." — Brian Essex, Analyst, JPMorgan
JPMorgan wasn't alone. Per Behind the Markets' roundup of Thursday's analyst moves, Oppenheimer's Param Singh reiterated Outperform and lifted his target to $235 from $200. Rosenblatt's John McPeake raised his to $260 on October 27.
The Street is leaning bullish, but not unanimously. Of 17 tracked firms, 11 rate Palantir a buy, five are neutral, and one is bearish. The average target of about $209.76 sits only 8% above Thursday's price, which tells you JPMorgan is well above the pack.
So what's the stock-specific tip? Palantir reports on Monday, November 2, and JPMorgan placed it on Positive Catalyst Watch going in. The bank's Q3 estimates are broadly in line with consensus, but Essex sees room for results to come in meaningfully higher if execution holds.
That's a notable setup. When the sell-side bar is only "in line," a beat that extends the 93% growth rate can move the stock. A deceleration, on the other hand, would hurt more than usual at this valuation.
The risks are real. At 164 times trailing earnings, Palantir has little room for error. It also leans on government contracts, and AI stocks are swinging hard this week on every big-tech print.
HSBC's Stephen Bersey downgraded the stock to Hold back on May 1, and the shares sit close to their 52-week high of $212.94. A stock near its high going into earnings can fall on a good report.
What should you do with this? If you own Palantir, the earnings date is the thing to circle. Know your position size before Monday, because moves around this report can be sharp in both directions.
If you don't own it and want exposure, consider scaling in rather than buying all at once. The mid-$190s, where the stock traded Thursday, is a more comfortable reference than the $212.94 peak. Look at what management says about commercial growth and guidance, not only the headline beat.
Also keep an eye on how the broader AI trade behaves. If Friday's tech weakness continues, even a clean quarter may get a muted reaction at first.
Bottom line: JPMorgan is betting Palantir's profit-rich growth justifies its premium, and Monday's report is the first test of that bet.
