And right now, the shortage is so severe that Silicon Valley executives are reportedly camping out in South Korean hotels, literally begging for DRAM allocation.
They’ve even earned a nickname: “DRAM beggars.”
Micron Technology (MU) has been the most visible beneficiary of this crisis. The stock is up 63% in 2026 and surged another 11% over the past five days alone, pushing its market cap to $525.4 billion — surpassing Oracle. Micron reports earnings today, and the numbers are expected to be monstrous. But the bigger story isn’t one company’s quarter — it’s a structural shortage that could define the next phase of the AI trade.
Here’s why this matters: modern AI models need enormous amounts of DRAM to function. Training a ChatGPT-scale model can require hundreds of terabytes of DRAM across GPUs. Without enough memory, AI literally runs out of space to think. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang flagged this months ago, calling the “memory bottleneck severe.” He wasn’t exaggerating.
The math is brutal. Nearly 100 gigawatts of new data centers are scheduled to come online over the next four years. But there’s only enough DRAM to support about 15 gigawatts of AI data center buildout in the next two years. That’s a massive supply gap. Market researcher TrendForce projects conventional DRAM contract prices will surge 90-95% in Q1 2026 versus Q4 2025 — one of the fastest pricing spikes the memory industry has ever recorded.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the other two major DRAM suppliers alongside Micron, have had to police their customers’ purchases to prevent hoarding. That’s how tight this market is. When suppliers are rationing product, you know the pricing power story is real.
The investment angle here goes beyond just Micron. The companies supplying the infrastructure to produce memory chips — the equipment makers, the materials suppliers, the foundry enablers — could be even bigger winners.
