Alphabet Crushed Q2 Earnings — And Just Confirmed the AI Trade Is Far From Over

Alphabet delivered a blockbuster second-quarter report on July 23 that silenced the doubters — at least temporarily. The Google parent posted total revenue of $119.8 billion, up 24% year over year, while Google Cloud surged 82%, and operating income climbed 30% with margins expanding to 34%. The results arrived at a critical moment: investors have been nervous for months that the AI infrastructure boom was running out of steam. Alphabet’s report was a direct rebuttal.

The headline number that matters most for the AI trade is capex. Alphabet not only maintained its massive spending plans — it raised them. Full-year 2026 capital expenditures now sit at $195 to $205 billion, up from the $180 to $190 billion guidance set in April. CFO Anat Ashkenazi confirmed that 2027 spending will “significantly increase” beyond that. Year over year, capex doubled — coming in at $44.9 billion for the quarter alone. The downside: that aggressive spending pushed free cash flow into negative territory at -$5.85 billion for the quarter, which is why the stock sold off 7% on the day. But the broader signal is clear — the hyperscalers are not pulling back.

  • For retail investors, the real takeaway is what Alphabet’s results mean for the wider AI ecosystem. AI infrastructure plays — companies supplying chips, memory, networking, and data center hardware — bounced hard after the report. Western Digital gained 5%, Marvell rose 2%, and Seagate added 3% on the day Nasdaq fell 2%. The “Lag 7” narrative — the idea that the Magnificent Seven have lost their edge — is looking increasingly premature. FactSet data shows the Mag 7 are on track for 31.1% earnings growth in Q2 2026, well above the 22.8% rate for the rest of the S&P 500. Alphabet is just the first domino this earnings season. Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Apple still report — and if the pattern holds, the AI trade could have significant upside remaining.
